HAPPY HANUKKAH!

Happy Hanukkah! The gifts of Hanukkah... An Inheritance... Let It Not Pass! Every year we get them out, the old familiar baytelakh, Menorah, Dreydl and we gather at the synagogue and echo the words of Zechariah : Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord..." reverberates around us and once again we feel a magical connection with the past. The faith and courage that inspired The Miracle of Hanukkah.

Every darkening December as the evening before the 25th day of the Hebrew Month of Kislev approaches we again renew our family and friends with its images.

Our familiar items: childrens eyes widening with the Menorah being placed in the window. The crys of: " Gimel" from the kids and granparents, the baytelakh being opened on the kitchen table revealing the 18 pennies: the khet and yud that equals khai, or life and latkes frying in the kitchen. All these images brings to mind the Mircle of Hanukkah.

WHAT IS HANUKKAH?

Hanukkah is more than just a holiday. It is a celebration of two events. Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, or A Great Miracle Happened There. But what is this great miracle?

When the last Jewish citizen/soldiers of Jerusalem entered the defiled Temple, their jubilation at their courageous victory was shadowed by signs of hatred and vandalism around them. They rid the town of the idol and cleaned up. They swept up the debris, washed away the dried pig's blood, put up new curtains, and rebuilt broken walls and doors. And they began to look for some oil to light the candelabrum with, to show that the Temple was renewed and rededicated to the One Creator.

Antiochus's soldiers had spilled almost all the supplies of consecrated oil and only one jar was left. All it held was a few drops, enough to burn for one day. This is when the miracle happened. The few drops of oil burned for eight full days, long enough for a fresh supply of oil to be secured for the candelabrum. This is the miracle that Hanukkah records and celebrates, and is why it last for eight days, beginning with the lighting of a single candle, until on the eighth night and by the addition of a new candle every day, the glory of the miracle has grown and all eight candles are afire at once.

The rabbis who first began to mark Hanukkah-- which means dedication-- thought this small miracle more important than any victory, even a victory for the freedom of religion, even a victory over a brutal oppressor. We can understand why the rabbis emphasized the miracle of the little bit of oil that lasted and lasted, and endured beyound all expectations.

The oil reminds us of the burning bush that burned and was not consumed by the flames and out of which the Voice of the Lord was heard. The oil reminds us of the Children of Israel who are often endangered but who live and live and will always live, eternally choosing freedom.

" Not by might, nor by Power, but by Spirit, saith the Lord..." The next time you begin a game with the Dreydl remember there is more to it than Nun or nothing, Hey or Half. A Great Miracle Happened There.. Nes Gadol Hayah Sham.
